I saw your bad back pain site and had to write to you.

My husband is 50 now. When he was about 36, he injured his back somehow and was put on meds and sent to physical therapy. He recovered and was his self again. Until this last summer, that is. At 49, he thought he could hop a curb on his bicycle and now knows it was silly to try. It wasn't the trying, really, but the failing part that hurt. He's such a man, he thought he'd suck it up as always, and continue with his lawn mowing, etc.

So then, this last August we went on a white water rafting trip and he twisted wrong trying to get back on the raft. He took some ibuprofen and everything seemed square. By the end of Aug, he had been trying off on on over the last few months to do his old physical therapy exercises but it wasn't working and he knew he needed to see a doc. He was still mowing and carrying on like usual. I just didn't realize what I do now.

We saw the doc Aug 28th, and was told to take 4 ibuprofen 3x a day for 6 weeks along with a 5 day packet of prednisone. Nothing. During this time, he became so desperate he saw a chiropractor which was able to give him only a small amount of relief. At some point the chiropractor said, something is wrong, I can't help you. You need an MRI.

The MRI showed he had budging discs from the L3 to the L5/S1. This is about as low as it can go. His MRI was not necessarily any worse than someone who had minor issues, but the issue is that they were budging and touching nerves, which shot pain down his left leg to his toes, and it was 24/7 for 4 months straight. It wrecked his life, and he turned 50 in pain and sleeping on the floor, unable to sit in chairs or do anything other than go to work and recover to do it all over again the next day. He survived work with pain killers, risking addiction, which he escaped. There honestly and truly was not anything else going on in his life. We all thought this was what life was going to be like for a long time.

We finally saw a neurosurgeon on Dec 11 and had surgery on Dec 29th. Technology/Science blessed us and his recovery was only 1 week, using endoscopic and micro scopic tools. As of now, he's released to take small steps to go back to fully duty of his life.

I guess I wanted to tell you this, because I wonder if while you dislike exercise, maybe it's better than going through what the alternatives may lead to. I hate exercize too. :)

I hope things go well with your back. :)

(A while back I took some yoga classes that were easier than the classes you see on TV. Perhaps they were beginners yoga. After 5 classes, I felt significantly stronger, and more in control of my body. I stopped because my husbands condition was worsening and I had more responsibilities and just didn't have time. I plan to go back. Yoga is something you can do at night, too, because at the end, if done properly, you really do feel like going to sleep. This is something you can do with family. If you own a Wii, they have the game WiiFit and is a great way to make fitness fun. It keeps track of your score and allows you to unlock areas as you get better/faster. WiiFit is sort of like yoga. This can be done in a social setting. It's actually fun for everyone!)

And I've been looking for an excuse to buy the Wii...
by: Steve

Hi - thanks for your comments.

I still don't like exercise, but my wife is nagging me to go swimming. Now that I've thrown off the cold that I've had for a few weeks, I have
finally started.

But perhaps I should just buy a Wii Fit instead. Hmm.

I also know that everyone with back pain becomes an expert - but something that has helped me is Bowen therapy. I've no idea if it would work for your husband, but in the event of a relapse it might be worth keeping in the back of your mind.
