27 years old and back pain for 15 of these...

As the title suggests I'm 27 years old (well very soon anyway) and have had recurring acute and chronic back pain since I was about 12. I don't know what started this although my Mum still blames the carrying my school bag on one shoulder as the root cause. Which could be true considering the weight that used to be in thse bags! Trainers for PE, numerous heavy, thick books, various girlie "necessities", etc.
Anyway, I digress, what led me to this site today is because, yet again, I'm off work with back pain. I was off for 3 days just before Christmas and here I am again. I think this time is due to my own doing. I decided that prevention is better than cure so decided to throw myself into pilates and gym ball excercises which I think is the cause of this particular flare up. I think I overdid it.
I have bad flare ups every 2 years or so where I have to take time off work with the longest being 2 weeks. My current job involves sitting in front of a computer all day feeling my back get stiffer and stiffer. Yesterday was unbearable at work so I went to the doctors for pain relief and was signed off for the rest of the week. I'm aware bed rest is not the answer but currently neither is sitting at my desk all day until this eases.
I went to physio when I was in my early teens. This didn't help. I didn't feel any benefit from it at all and was reluctant to go again when it was suggested in December by my GP. However I've decided it won't do any harm and if it helps a little then it'll be worth it.
Upon my doctor's suggestion I have booked a chiropractor appt for tomorrow which is the first time I've been to one but I have nothing to lose now. My GP also suggested McKenzie treatments which is what originally led me to this site. So I'm going to look into this a bit more.
My dad is a qualified therapeutic masseur which has relieved my back in the past so he worked on it last night which has helped a little.
I'm getting to the really fed up stage now. I'm sick of having to take time off work and having constant pain one way or the other. Even when I'm not having a "flare up" I am constantly aware of my back and have twinges and stiffness often.
I'm running out of ideas!
